AutoM3U is a simple, folder-based M3U playlist generator. It can be used to complement tag-based digital audio players that do not provide an easy way to play music by folder.
AutoM3U is distributed in two versions: installable and portable.
Source folder
The name of the folder that contains the media files. Pressing the button with the folder icon will bring up the Windows folder selection dialog. You can also drag and drop a folder from the Windows Explorer.
Extensions
The types of media files to include in the playlists. Specify the extensions of the files, separated with spaces. A leading dot is optional. The default extensions are "mp3 wma ogg flac wav".
Save to
Determines where the playlists will be stored. There are 3 options:
Format
The output playlist format. Available options are:
M3U8 uses Unicode and is recommended for players that support it. Although a byte order mark (BOM) is not needed, some players (e.g. foobar2000) require it, so two M3U8 format options are provided to experiment with.
M3U can only store characters from a single codepage and replaces other characters with question marks. The M3U format does not officially specify the codepage it uses, so support in players varies. AutoM3U provides 3 popular choices: Latin1 (ISO-8859-1 encoding), ACP (the current Windows codepage) and ASCII (7-bit US-ASCII).
AutoM3U will report any codepage encoding errors after playlist generation and will optionally write a log with the names of the relevant files.
Custom save folder
The folder to store the playlists. Available when the playlists location is set to Custom.
Name
Specifies the naming of the playlists, using any of the following name parts: the containing folder, its parent and its grandparent (in either forward or reverse order).
Name prefix
An optional, short string to add to the beginning of the playlist names. It can be used to make the auto-generated playlists stand out from any other custom-made ones. The default is a tilde ("~").
Separator
A short string to separate the different folder names, when the Name specified above contains any parent folders. The default is " - ".
File order
Sets the order of the playlist entries. The primary order is applied first; the secondary order can be used to further sort items with identical primary order values. Either of them can be reversed by checking the Reverse option below them.
The order keys are divided in three categories:
For each folder include subfolder files
Check this to include the files of all nested folders in each playlist. The top-level playlist will then effectively contain all the files from Check this to include the files of all nested folders in each playlist. The top-level playlist will then effectively contain all the files from the Source folder. If left unchecked, each playlist will only contain the files of its respective folder.
Delete previously created playlists
Use this to automatically scan the Source media folder (and the Custom playlist folder, if applicable) and delete all previously created playlists before creating the new ones. This will ensure that playlists referring to deleted folders will automatically go away.
Create playlists
Create the playlists using the current settings.
